California disability insurance can be sought out by way of the State Disability Insurance (SDI) program, which is a program that is “worker funded” and helps those employees who are insured and eligible in the event that they cannot work due to an injury or sickness. The injury or sickness has to be unrelated to the workplace. For example if you fell off a ladder and broke your wrist at home because your were painting or if you tripped and fell down the stairs and hurt your neck or back the SDI program could provide assistance for you.
The SDI program will not pay all of your wages or salary if you get sick or become injured outside of the workplace but it will pay a portion. The SDI program also covers a female worker if she chooses to take time off of work to have a baby or due to complications related to childbirth. It also allows benefits for those who adopt a minor child (for example any youngster under the age of 18) or take in a minor child for foster care purposes. In the case of adoption or foster care the SDI program will only pay out if these events take place within one year of the event happening. This form of California disability insurance also covers the time off that a worker requires in order to look after a loved one who is very ill. This generally covers a spouse, parent, child and/or a common law partner.
California disability insurance can also come about by way of the Disability Insurance Elective Coverage program, which is geared towards those who are self-employed or who are owners of businesses. This program is put on by the Employment Development Department and it helps protect a worker’s financial interests in the event that he or she was to hurt himself or herself or become sick and unable to continue to work for a time. When it comes to this type of California disability insurance a person’s income is protected from sickness, injury and for women, from lost wages due to pregnancy and complications from pregnancy. The Disability Insurance Elective Coverage program can be used to help individuals regardless of whether the injury or illness happens while they were working or not.
In order to qualify for California disability insurance under the Disability Insurance Elective Coverage program a person must be either classified as self-employed or be a business owner. As well at the time an application for California disability insurance is sent in the person must be going about their regular day to day work responsibilities on a full time basis. The person who applies for this California disability insurance must make all or the majority of their income from their business, occupation, company or trade. A business that is deemed as seasonal such as fishing for example will not be considered eligible fro this type of disability insurance under California law. When you apply for the Elective Coverage program you must be willing to remain in the program for a period of at least two full years. The only two incidences in which you can get out of it are if you move out of the state of California or if you for whatever reason choose to close down your business and find another trade or occupation (if for example it is not financially lucrative enough for you). In most cases a member must be covered under the program for at least a period of six months before they are deemed eligible to file any kind of insurance claim.
