Disability Insurance Cost

What does disability insurance cost mean to you? Do you know that disability insurance is a time sensitive topic that should matter to everyone who holds down a job. When it comes to disability insurance cost you should get all of the facts before anything bad befalls you. In terms of disability insurance cost, a group plan through your employer is an excellent way to go and it will cost you less in the long-term than will an individual plan or a private disability plan.

However the disability insurance cost of a group plan will not pay you as much as your weekly or monthly income is. In most cases it will pay you approximately 60 percent of your annual income and for the great majority of people this is not nearly enough. Many group plans have short-term disability but no long-term disability and if the injury or illness occurs late in your working years, it will not cover you up to the age of 65.

There is often a waiting period for most group plans and if your savings and/or your spouse’s income cannot see you through this period then you need to look at disability insurance cost in relation to individual insurance. With a group plan it is often possible to have your premiums deducted directly from your paycheck so you do not bear the brunt of setting the money aside on your own. When you do this however you decrease the amount of money that your employer must declare to the IRS and there this affects how much income tax you pay in any given year. There is a bad side to this however, any and all benefits you receive are deemed to be a form of taxable income.

The monthly premiums of an individual disability insurance policy are not in any way tax deductible. Many people are not aware of that fact. Get “in the know” in every way that you can. If you do need at any point in time to collect the disability benefits the money you get will not be subject to income tax.

The disability insurance cost might be offset somewhat by worker’s compensation if your injury or illness took place while you were at work. Most workplaces have provisions in place for job-related accidents but if you get sick or take a fall at home while painting the staircase or working on your roof, the disability insurance cost will not be covered by worker’s compensation. The name says it all- it is compensation for workers and should really be referred to as “workplace compensation.”

A disability insurance cost can be helped somewhat by social security but there are many restrictions put on this form of disability insurance. As well many people are turned down for social security in regards to disability insurance because the criteria are very strict. Social security alone is not likely to help maintain the quality of life you are used to. When it comes to disability insurance cost, take a look at all of the factors and then decided what the best course of action for you is specifically.
