Disability Insurance Pregnancy

Disability Insurance Pregnancy

Many people do not think of disability insurance as relating to women who are pregnant or complications that could arise as a result of childbirth but disability insurance pregnancy is a reality. Pregnancy makes it impossible for a woman to work after a given period of time and that is where short-term disability insurance pregnancy comes in. There are also cases where disability insurance pregnancy can be obtained as a supplement to a group health plan through one’s employer.

For the majority of insurance policies, disability insurance pregnancy starts two weeks before the birth takes place and it ends approximately six weeks after the baby has been born. This is true in the case of a normal birth but when it comes to Caesarian section births, the end of the disability insurance pregnancy is eight weeks. Most of the time women know ahead of schedule whether they are having a pregnancy with complications or one without complications.

If you have disability insurance pregnancy through your employer you should let your workplace know approximately 30 days before you plan to go on your maternity leave and need to start your disability insurance pregnancy benefits. Some health insurance plans have provisions in place for pregnancy as well as disability insurance for this purpose whereas others do not. Disability insurance pregnancy sometimes has a wider definition and can be used not only for biological children but also when you plan to adopt or even if you become a foster parent. If you are not clear about what your policy allows, sit down with an insurance representative and find out.

The state disability insurance (SDI) is where most women look to for disability insurance pregnancy. Most women qualify under this program and as stated above, the benefits usually extend from up to four weeks preceding the pregnancy (from the expected date of delivery) to six weeks after the baby has come into the world. For babies born through C-sections or cases in which there are medical complications generally this may be eight weeks or longer. It also might depend on what the doctor has to say.

You cannot send in a claim for disability insurance pregnancy to the SDI until after your doctor has declared that your condition makes it impossible for you to work at all. In the case where your doctor feels you can still work but you can only work part time or on a modified basis, you might qualify for partial disability insurance pregnancy benefits or in some cases even full disability benefits.

If you should decide to work right up until the day you go into labor you are not able to add any extra time to your recovery period after the baby is born under the SDI program. Disability insurance pregnancy benefits are only paid out for the amount of weeks (or sometimes months) that you are unable to perform your regular work duties.

If you need to stop working sooner than what is deemed the average for the SDI program, the factors that make this so will be taken into effect such as your age, the type of work you do, the ways in which your job limits you, your present medical condition, any past problems with pregnancy and a note from your physician stating that it is necessary for the health of the baby for you to cease working as soon as possible.
